In a significant show of diplomatic support, two global powers have publicly aligned themselves with Venezuela as it faces an escalating economic and maritime pressure campaign from the United States. The US administration, meanwhile, has reiterated its demand for a change in leadership in Caracas.
The US government has recently intensified its efforts to restrict the South American nation’s oil exports, a cornerstone of its economy. This has reportedly led to a slowdown in port activity, with numerous tankers loaded with crude oil remaining anchored offshore. The situation has created logistical and financial strain, forcing Venezuela to offer steeper discounts to secure shipments.
In response to these measures, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry stated that the seizure of vessels belonging to another nation constitutes a serious breach of international law. China, a major purchaser of Venezuelan crude, emphasized its opposition to unilateral sanctions, asserting that all countries have the right to engage in international relations. Separately, following a discussion between their foreign ministers, the Russian government issued a statement expressing “full support and solidarity” with Venezuela’s leadership. The statement further warned that the US actions in the Caribbean region risked provoking serious consequences and threatening maritime security.
The US administration has defended its strategy, framing it as a necessary action against activities it alleges are funded by Venezuelan oil revenues. These claims have been met with strong denial from Caracas, which has accused Washington of engaging in “international piracy” and pursuing an agenda of regime change.
The Venezuelan president directly addressed the mounting pressure, suggesting that the US leadership would be better served concentrating on its own domestic challenges rather than issuing threats. The standoff has introduced new volatility to global energy shipping lanes, with several incidents involving tankers in the Caribbean Sea contributing to rising regional tensions.
