In an unconventional operation, law enforcement officers in Thailand utilized a traditional lion dance costume to apprehend a man suspected of stealing valuable Buddhist artefacts. The arrest took place during Lunar New Year celebrations near a temple in the Bangkok metropolitan area.
Authorities reported that the suspect, a 33-year-old man with a prior criminal history, was believed to be responsible for a residential burglary where numerous sacred objects, including two Buddha statues, were taken. The estimated value of the stolen items was approximately 2 million baht.
After an investigation yielded limited leads, police maintained surveillance on a location connected to the case. The breakthrough came when officers devised a plan to blend in with a local lion dance performance—a common feature of the festive period—taking place at a nearby temple. Disguised within the vibrant costume, they were able to approach the individual without raising suspicion.
Video footage from the operation shows the moment officers emerged from the lion costume to detain the suspect with assistance from colleagues stationed nearby. The man was taken into custody without further incident.
Police officials noted that the unique strategy was employed due to the challenges of the case and the public setting, allowing for a discreet and effective apprehension.
