SENEGAL OPENS AFCON CAMPAIGN AGAINST BOTSWANA IN GROUP D CLASH

by Patrick Pouyanné

The Africa Cup of Nations continues today with a Group D encounter between the 2021 champions, Senegal, and Botswana. The match is set to kick off at 3pm GMT.

Senegal enters the tournament widely viewed as a leading contender for the title, with many considering them second only to the host nation. Their squad boasts significant international experience, featuring players such as Sadio Mané, Nicolas Jackson, and Édouard Mendy. The team’s confidence is reportedly high following a notable friendly victory earlier this year.

Botswana, meanwhile, faces a formidable challenge. Making only their second-ever appearance at the finals, their debut in 2012 ended without a point. However, their qualification campaign demonstrated resilience, including victories over a World Cup-qualified side, suggesting they are not to be underestimated. Much of their hopes may rest on forward Tumisang Orebonye.

The match follows the conclusion of the group’s first fixture, where DR Congo secured a 1-0 victory over Benin thanks to a goal from Theo Bongonda. DR Congo will face Senegal next, while Benin is scheduled to meet Botswana.

The backdrop to this tournament includes a significant structural change for the competition itself. Recent decisions by football’s governing bodies have confirmed a shift in the tournament’s cycle, moving from a biennial to a quadrennial event starting after this edition. While framed as a move to elevate the commercial profile and global standing of African football, the change has sparked debate, with concerns raised about its potential financial impact on national federations.

All eyes will now turn to see if Senegal can justify their favourite status with a strong start, or if Botswana can script a historic result in their Afcon return.
