MILITANTS LAUNCH COORDINATED ASSAULT ON KEY NIGERIEN AIR HUB

A major international airport and an adjoining military airbase in Niger’s capital were targeted in a brazen overnight assault claimed by a regional affiliate of the Islamic State. The attack involved militants on motorcycles deploying heavy weapons and drones, causing significant damage to commercial aircraft.

According to security analysts monitoring extremist communications, the assault began in the early hours of Thursday at the Diori Hamani International Airport and the nearby Base Aérienne 101. Propaganda channels associated with the jihadist group stated the operation was a coordinated surprise attack.

Initial reports indicate the gunfire and explosions damaged at least three commercial planes, including aircraft operated by carriers from Ivory Coast and Togo. Airline personnel were reported safe, having been accommodated away from the airport at the time of the incident.

Security forces responded to the incursion, with national authorities reporting that twenty assailants were killed and eleven others captured during the engagement. An ammunition cache was also set ablaze during the fighting.

This attack underscores the persistent threat posed by Islamist militant groups in the Sahel region. The same affiliate has been linked to several major incidents in Niger in recent months, including mass-casualty assaults and the abduction of a foreign national.

The incident coincides with a period of significant political realignment in West Africa. Niger’s current leadership, which assumed power in 2023, has withdrawn from the main regional economic bloc. It has since formed a new alliance with neighboring nations under military rule, citing a shared need for sovereignty and a common struggle against extremist violence and external interference.

In a separate but concurrent development, jihadists launched a drone attack on a military base in northeastern Nigeria, resulting in multiple casualties among security personnel. These simultaneous strikes highlight the complex and transnational nature of the security challenge facing the region.
