LATE HAVERTZ STRIKE GIVES ARSENAL EDGE IN TENSE EUROPEAN BATTLE

A solitary, late goal from Kai Havertz has handed Arsenal a narrow but crucial advantage following a hard-fought 1-0 victory away to Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

The match at the Estádio José Alvalade was a tense, often frustrating affair for the Premier League leaders, who dominated possession but struggled for long periods to break down a disciplined Portuguese defence. The decisive moment arrived deep into added time when substitute Gabriel Martinelli delivered a cross from the left. Havertz, showing sharp composure, brought the ball under control before calmly slotting past the goalkeeper to snatch a vital win.

For much of the evening, Arsenal’s attacking play lacked its usual fluency. Despite controlling the tempo, clear chances from open play were scarce, with the team often relying on set-pieces for threat. Key attacking figures found it difficult to impose themselves against Sporting’s compact shape.

However, the visitors were indebted to their goalkeeper long before the winning goal. A series of exceptional saves throughout the contest proved fundamental to the result. A fingertip touch to divert a powerful early drive onto the crossbar was followed by a stunning reflex stop from a close-range header and a crucial double save in the second half, repeatedly denying the hosts as they finished the match strongly.

The introduction of Havertz and Martinelli from the bench injected fresh impetus into the Arsenal attack in the latter stages, ultimately providing the moment of quality that decided a tight encounter.

The result provides a significant boost following recent setbacks in domestic cup competitions and places Arsenal in a strong position to advance ahead of next week’s return leg in London. The late winner, forged amidst a stern European test, could prove a pivotal moment as the season reaches its climax.
