KENYAN NATIONALS REPORTEDLY RECRUITED FOR RUSSIAN WAR EFFORT IN UKRAINE

A recent intelligence briefing presented to Kenya’s parliament has revealed that over a thousand Kenyan citizens have been recruited to fight alongside Russian forces in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The report details a concerning operation targeting individuals for frontline deployment.

According to the parliamentary summary, recruitment is being conducted by unauthorized agencies and individuals within Kenya. These entities are reportedly focusing on former military and police personnel, as well as civilians between their mid-20s and 50s, who are seeking employment opportunities abroad.

The recruitment tactics allegedly involve promises of substantial monthly salaries, significant bonuses, and the prospect of obtaining Russian citizenship. The intelligence findings further suggest that these agencies have collaborated with officials from various Kenyan government departments to facilitate the recruits’ travel, circumventing checks at Nairobi’s main international airport. The report also claims coordination with diplomatic staff in both Kenya and Russia to secure necessary visas.

In response to these allegations, the Russian embassy in Kenya has issued a firm denial, stating that Russian authorities have never been involved in any illegal recruitment of Kenyan nationals and characterizing the reports as misinformation.

Due to increased scrutiny at Kenyan airports, the report notes that recruitment routes have shifted, with individuals now transiting through neighboring countries like Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as South Africa.

The briefing provided a status update on the known recruits, indicating that dozens have been hospitalized, repatriated, or gone missing. A smaller number are reported to be in military camps, on the frontline, or have completed contracts.

Kenya’s foreign minister is scheduled to visit Russia next month, with the issue of this clandestine recruitment expected to be a key topic of discussion. The situation reflects a broader pattern, as citizens from several African nations have reportedly been drawn into the conflict under similar circumstances. Recent weeks have seen the return of a small group of South African men who claim they were deceived into fighting for Russia by a private security contractor.
