India emphatically revived its Twenty20 World Cup campaign with a dominant 72-run victory over Zimbabwe in a Super 8s match, posting the tournament’s highest total to date. Sent in to bat, the Indian lineup unleashed a relentless assault, amassing 256 for four, a score built on aggressive half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Hardik Pandya.

The innings featured a barrage of 17 sixes and an equal number of fours, as the top order capitalized on a Zimbabwean bowling attack hampered by fielding lapses. Chasing a monumental target, Zimbabwe could only manage 184 for six. A valiant, unbeaten 97 from 59 balls by Brian Bennett was insufficient, confirming his team’s elimination from the competition.

The win sets up a decisive final Super 8s clash for India against the West Indies, effectively a quarter-final, with a semi-final berth at stake. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav praised the collective batting effort, noting, “The contribution from all the batters was heartening to see. We could have been more clinical with the ball, but a win is a win.”

After a steady start, Sharma, who had begun the tournament with three consecutive ducks, found his form spectacularly, racing to a 26-ball fifty. Pandya’s late onslaught of 50 runs, combined with Tilak Varma’s 44, added an unbroken 84-run partnership to seal the match.

In the day’s other key Super 8s fixture, South Africa moved to the brink of the semi-finals with a comprehensive nine-wicket win over the West Indies. Chasing 177, the Proteas’ chase was led by a blistering 95-run opening stand between captain Aiden Markram, who finished 82 not out, and Quinton de Kock (47). The victory, achieved with 23 balls to spare, extends South Africa’s unbeaten run in the tournament to six matches.

The West Indies, struggling at 83 for seven, were revived by a defiant 89-run partnership between Romario Shepherd (52 not out) and Jason Holder (49), lifting them to a total of 176 for eight. However, South Africa’s powerful top order made light work of the chase, with Markram’s 46-ball knock setting the tone.

South Africa can now secure top spot in Group One with a victory in their final Super 8s match.
