HISTORIC CONVICTION: FRENCH ISIS MEMBER FOUND GUILTY OF GENOCIDE AGAINST YAZIDIS

by Emilie Lopes

A French national affiliated with the Islamic State has been convicted of genocide and crimes against humanity for his role in the systematic persecution of the Yazidi religious minority. The landmark ruling by a Paris court marks a significant legal step in addressing the atrocities committed by the jihadist group.

The defendant, Sabri Essid, was tried in absentia. The court determined he actively participated in an organized campaign of murder, sexual enslavement, and violence targeting Yazidis in Iraq and Syria between 2014 and 2016. The conviction relied heavily on the harrowing testimonies of survivors.

One survivor recounted being purchased by Essid and subjected to daily rape for over two years, often in the presence of her young child. Other women identified him as their captor, stating they were bought for nominal sums, treated as property, and subjected to brutal abuse.

Evidence presented to the court included disturbing communications from ISIS forums, which detailed a structured slave trade. Documents listed women and girls with assigned “market prices,” while internal discussions revealed the group’s chilling ideology: girls as young as nine were deemed suitable for sexual slavery, and boys were taken to be trained as fighters.

The genocide against the Yazidis began with a large-scale massacre in the Sinjar region in August 2014. Thousands were killed, and approximately 6,000 people, mostly women and children, were enslaved. An estimated 2,000 remain missing. Investigators described a deliberate ISIS plan to eliminate the Yazidi people through killing, forced conversion, and systematic enslavement.

Legal representatives for the victims emphasized the trial’s importance, stating it allowed survivors to break their silence and seek accountability. They hailed the verdict as a hard-won achievement driven by the courage of those who testified, calling it a crucial fight against historical erasure.

This case follows other international prosecutions related to the Yazidi genocide. In a separate proceeding in Germany, an ISIS member received a life sentence for crimes that included causing the death of a captive Yazidi child.

Sabri Essid, who is the stepbrother of a known French terrorist, traveled to the conflict zone in 2014. Although presumed dead in 2018, his status remains unconfirmed. He gained further notoriety from a propaganda video in which he encouraged a child to execute a hostage.
