GAME AWARDS 2025: FRENCH INDIE TRIUMPHS, STAR WARS RETURNS, AND A DOUBLE DOSE OF LARA CROFT

by Philippe Jacqué

The annual Game Awards ceremony in Los Angeles delivered its signature blend of industry accolades and major reveals, with a clear narrative emerging by the night’s end. The spotlight belonged not to a blockbuster sequel, but to a breakout indie title that swept the major categories.

The evening’s dominant force was the French-developed role-playing game Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Entering the night with a record number of nominations, the title secured nine awards, including the coveted Game of the Year, alongside honors for Best Direction, Art, Narrative, and a win for performer Jennifer English. The achievement is notable for a debut project with a modest budget, standing in contrast to the high-profile, big-budget sequels it competed against.

The event also served as a platform for significant announcements from major franchises. Fans of classic RPGs received major news with the reveal of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. Positioned as a spiritual successor to the beloved Knights of the Old Republic series, the project is a single-player narrative adventure helmed by original director Casey Hudson and in development at Arcanaut Studios.

The Tomb Raider series is also poised for a major comeback with a dual-pronged approach. Announcements confirmed both a ground-up remake of the seminal 1996 original, titled Legacy of Atlantis, and a brand-new adventure, Tomb Raider: Catalyst.

Further announcements came from Larian Studios, the acclaimed developer behind Baldur’s Gate 3. The studio teased its next project, a new entry in its Divinity RPG series, with a cryptic promotional campaign that culminated in a reveal during the show.

Other notable reveals included a charming fantasy puzzle-platformer, Covenant of the Chicken Foot, from a new indie studio led by a veteran of major narrative-driven franchises. Capcom showcased Resident Evil Requiem, the next chapter in its survival horror series, featuring the return of a fan-favorite character. Additional premieres spanned genres, from a cooperative shooter from veterans of Left 4 Dead to a sci-fi mystery set in a lunar hotel and a sequel to the critically acclaimed Control.

While the ceremony itself remains a subject of debate within the gaming community, the 2025 event will be remembered for its champion. The success of a small, ambitious studio against industry titans offered a resonant narrative in an era often defined by corporate consolidation and soaring development costs.
