In a move underscoring the enduring value of domestic cricket, England batsman Ben Duckett has withdrawn from a major Twenty20 contract, prioritising his place in the national Test side over a significant short-term payday.
Duckett was set to join the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming Indian Premier League season under a deal reportedly worth £200,000. However, he has now opted out, a decision that under tournament regulations will see him barred from the IPL for the next three years. His focus has shifted firmly to the English county championship with Nottinghamshire.
The left-handed opener cited a need for a mental and physical reset after a demanding international schedule, which included a challenging Ashes series in Australia and subsequent global travel. He emphasised that the foundation of his Test career has always been built on performances in the longer domestic format.
“The chance to play for England is the ultimate honour, and right now, preparing for that means being at home, refreshing, and playing four-day cricket for my county,” Duckett stated. “That’s the path that got me here, and I believe it’s the path to finding my best form again.”
His withdrawal follows a similar decision by teammate Harry Brook last year, highlighting a growing trend among some English players to safeguard their red-ball credentials. Duckett’s Test position has come under scrutiny following a difficult tour of Australia and an off-field incident that drew criticism, making his commitment to regaining form through county cricket a strategic calculation.
