In a decisive tactical move, Australia has confirmed it will field an attack comprised entirely of fast bowlers for the upcoming Boxing Day Test against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The selection means there will be no specialist spinner in the home side’s lineup for the fourth Ashes contest.
The decision comes despite the recent inclusion of off-spinner Todd Murphy into the squad as cover for the injured Nathan Lyon. Team management, led by stand-in captain Steve Smith, has pointed to the condition of the MCG pitch, which currently shows a significant covering of grass, as the primary reason for opting against a slow bowler.
Smith, returning to leadership duties, indicated the surface appears tailored for seam movement. “The wickets we’ve encountered in this series have largely favored the pace bowlers,” Smith stated. “You have to adapt to the conditions presented, and everything here suggests the fast men will get assistance. This is purely a pitch-based decision and no reflection on Todd’s abilities, who we regard very highly.”
This marks the third time in Australia’s last five Test matches that a frontline spinner has been omitted, highlighting a trend in their recent selections. The gamble is notable for a venue where legendary spinners have historically thrived.
The 12-man squad features a trio of pace bowlers—Jhye Richardson, Brendan Doggett, and Michael Neser—vying for the final bowling spot, with one set to miss selection. Richardson is in contention for his first Test appearance in over four years following persistent injuries, with Smith praising his “outstanding” skills at the international level.
The batting order sees Usman Khawaja, who celebrated his 39th birthday last week, retaining his place at number five following solid contributions in Adelaide. He moves down the order to accommodate Smith’s return. The team is sticking with all-rounder Cameron Green, who will bat at seven after wicketkeeper Alex Carey’s match-winning double in the previous Test cemented his position.
Having already secured the Ashes urn with a rapid series victory, Australia now aims to inflict a 5-0 series whitewash on England, a feat not achieved in over a decade. England’s challenges mount with the confirmation that key fast bowler Jofra Archer will miss the remainder of the series due to injury, while batter Ollie Pope has been dropped from the side.
Australia Squad: Travis Head, Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith (capt), Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Michael Neser, Mitchell Starc, Jhye Richardson, Brendan Doggett, Scott Boland.
