AUSTRALIA EDGES PAST DETERMINED NORTH KOREA TO REACH ASIAN CUP SEMIFINALS

A tense and hard-fought 2-1 victory over North Korea has secured Australia a place in the Women’s Asian Cup semifinals and, crucially, qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The match, played in Perth, saw the host nation withstand immense pressure to claim the win.

Despite being outplayed for large stretches, Australia struck first against the run of play. A swift counterattack led by captain Sam Kerr ended with the ball falling to Alanna Kennedy just outside the penalty area. The midfielder controlled it expertly before firing home to give her side an early lead.

North Korea, displaying impressive speed and cohesive team play, dominated possession and created numerous chances. They were unfortunate not to equalize before halftime, seeing one effort cannon off the post. The Australian defense, under constant siege, relied on several key saves from goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold to maintain their narrow advantage.

The hosts doubled their lead almost immediately after the restart. A pressing error from the North Korean defense was pounced upon by Kerr, who drove into the box and unleashed a powerful shot to make it 2-0.

Undeterred, North Korea redoubled their efforts and were rewarded midway through the second half. A driving run and low cross from the right flank was converted to halve the deficit, setting up a nervy finale. The visitors came agonizingly close to an equalizer minutes later, but a chance from close range slid just wide of the post.

Australia spent much of the remaining time defending deeply, managing the game and repelling wave after wave of attack. Their resilience paid off, allowing them to see out the match and book their spot in the final four.

The semifinal will also be held in Perth, where Australia will await the winner of the clash between China and Taiwan.
