Australia has announced a reshuffled squad for the crucial Boxing Day Test at the MCG, with captain Pat Cummins ruled out for the remainder of the Ashes series. The decision comes despite Cummins’s successful return from a back injury in Adelaide, where he played a pivotal role in securing the series victory.
Selectors have opted not to risk the fast bowler’s long-term fitness now that the Ashes are retained. In his place, the pace attack will be reinforced by the inclusions of Jhye Richardson, Brendan Doggett, and Michael Neser. Veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon, who suffered a significant hamstring injury in the third Test, has been replaced by Victorian spinner Todd Murphy.
Lyon faces an extended rehabilitation period following surgery. His absence is a considerable blow after his match-turning five-wicket haul in Adelaide, which underscored his enduring value to the side.
Murphy, 25, earns a recall to the Test squad after last appearing against Sri Lanka earlier this year. He gets the nod ahead of other domestic spin options, having recently impressed for Australia A and in Sheffield Shield cricket.
Steve Smith will resume the captaincy in Cummins’s absence, having recovered from the illness that sidelined him in Adelaide. The squad also sees the continued inclusion of all-rounder Cameron Green and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis as the search for a stable middle-order combination continues.
With the series result decided, the focus for Australia now shifts to building depth and managing workloads ahead of future Test commitments against Bangladesh, South Africa, and New Zealand.
