A TEACHER’S DEFIANCE CAPTURES TOP DOCUMENTARY HONOR

by Philippe Jacqué

A film chronicling a primary school educator’s struggle against state propaganda has been awarded the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

The winning project, “Mr Nobody Against Putin,” centers on the experiences of Pavel Talankin, a teacher who documented the systematic indoctrination of young students in support of military action. Now living abroad, Talankin collaborated with American filmmaker David Borenstein on the project, which triumphed over several highly-touted competitors.

Accepting the award, Borenstein framed the film as a story of national erosion. “It’s about how you lose your country,” he stated. “You lose it through countless, small acts of complicity—when atrocities go unchallenged and independent voices are silenced. This film shows that even an ordinary person holds unexpected power.”

His co-filmmaker, Talankin, delivered a poignant appeal for peace. “In some places, children do not see shooting stars at night,” he said. “They see shooting bombs and drones. In the name of our future and all our children, these wars must end.”

The victory marks the third time in recent years a documentary critical of the Russian government has received the Oscar. Following the ceremony, Borenstein reflected on the broader implications of the film’s message, suggesting that the dynamics of media control and political pressure are not confined to one nation.

The award underscores the continued prominence of politically charged, personal narratives within the documentary field, honoring a quiet act of resistance captured from within a classroom.
