KEY U.S. EMPLOYMENT DATA POSTPONED AMID FUNDING IMPASSE

The release of the United States’ pivotal monthly employment report has been postponed, officials confirmed Monday, marking another disruption due to a lapse in federal government funding.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that its January 2026 employment summary, initially slated for publication this Friday, will be deferred until after congressional appropriations are restored. While data gathering is finished, the agency cannot finalize or disseminate the report during the shutdown.

This delay compounds existing backlogs from the extended federal closure late last year, which was the longest on record. The forthcoming data is highly anticipated, as it follows a year that saw the slowest pace of job creation in half a decade.

The current funding gap stems from a legislative deadlock. A dispute over proposed operational constraints on immigration enforcement authorities has stalled a spending bill for the Department of Homeland Security. Although the Senate advanced several full-year funding bills alongside a short-term homeland security measure last week, its passage in the House remains uncertain.

House Democratic leaders have not yet committed sufficient support for the temporary funding solution. However, the Republican Speaker expressed confidence that the chamber could secure the votes to restore government operations imminently.
