AUTEUR CINEMA TAKES CENTER STAGE AT THE 79TH CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

by Philippe Jacqué

The official selection for the 79th Cannes Film Festival has been announced, revealing a program dominated by celebrated international directors, with a notable scarcity of American contenders in the main competition.

The prestigious Palme d’Or will be contested by a slate of films from some of world cinema’s most respected figures. Among them are Pedro Almodóvar with “Bitter Christmas,” a story of filmmakers exploiting their personal lives for art; Paweł Pawlikowski’s “Fatherland,” featuring Sandra Hüller as the daughter of Thomas Mann; and László Nemes’s French resistance drama “Moulin.” Also in competition are new works from Hirokazu Kore-eda, Asghar Farhadi, and Cristian Mungiu.

The lineup underscores a strong European and Asian focus this year, with only one American director, Ira Sachs, presenting a film in the main competition. His musical fantasy, “The Man I Love,” explores the impact of the AIDS crisis on the artistic community.

Despite the limited U.S. presence in the official competition, Hollywood stars are expected on the Croisette. Projects screening out of competition or in sidebars include Andy Garcia’s noir film “Diamond” and John Travolta’s directorial debut, “Propeller One-Way Night Coach.” Other anticipated premieres feature actors such as Gillian Anderson, Rami Malek, and Cara Delevingne in various selections.

Beyond the narrative features, the festival’s documentary section promises high-profile entries. These include Stephen Soderbergh’s film centered on John Lennon’s final interview and a documentary about the iconic French footballer Eric Cantona. Another anticipated title is a film examining the infamous 1986 World Cup match between England and Argentina.

The festival is scheduled to run from May 12 to 23 on the French Riviera. The competition jury will be presided over by South Korean director Park Chan-wook. According to festival organizers, the announced program represents the vast majority of the final selection, though last-minute additions to the competition remain a tradition.
