FORMER NEPALI LEADER DETAINED IN CONNECTION WITH FATAL UNREST

A former head of government in Nepal has been taken into custody by authorities, linked to an investigation into a period of widespread civil unrest last year that resulted in numerous fatalities.

The arrest occurred at a private residence in the capital. A former senior official from the same administration was also detained. The detentions follow the recent formation of a new government, whose leadership campaigned on promises to address accountability for the events in question.

The protests in question began months ago, initially sparked by digital communication restrictions and broader public discontent. Demonstrations escalated significantly, leading to violent clashes and substantial property damage across the country, which ultimately contributed to the collapse of the previous administration.

A government-appointed commission of inquiry reportedly suggested legal action against several figures from the prior government for their handling of the crisis. While the investigation’s findings did not confirm explicit orders to use lethal force, they indicated a failure to adequately control the situation. A law enforcement representative stated the arrests were made based on these recommendations.

The legal counsel for the detained former leader has criticized the arrest procedure, calling it unnecessary and not in line with standard legal protocols, noting their client was subsequently taken to a medical facility.

The election of the new prime minister, a figure who rose to prominence outside the traditional political sphere, is widely viewed as a direct consequence of the protest movement, signaling a public demand for change and accountability.
