As the Muslim world celebrated Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, many in Kabul observed a day of mourning and desperate search. A recent military strike targeted a facility in the Afghan capital, resulting in significant casualties and leaving families to scour burial sites for their missing loved ones.
The targeted site was reported to be a rehabilitation center for individuals recovering from addiction. Initial assessments of the aftermath indicate a high number of fatalities and injuries. One man spent the holiday searching hillside graves after identifying his brother, a tailor and father, in footage of mass burials. The graves, however, remain unmarked, denying families the solace of a known resting place. “To spend Eid searching for your brother’s body is the deepest sorrow,” he stated.
Survivors recount a night of horror. The strike occurred as residents had retired following evening prayers. One young man described being awakened by an explosion, finding his room engulfed in flames. He sustained serious injuries from debris penetrating the walls. From his hospital bed, he expressed a fervent desire for a response to the attack.
Aid workers arriving at the scene described a catastrophic landscape. A major structure was reduced to rubble, with fires burning intensely. Recovery efforts yielded grim discoveries, and the air carried the lingering scent of fire. Medical facilities received victims with severe, penetrating wounds, a type of injury that had become less common in recent years.
Patients at the rehabilitation center were reportedly receiving vocational training and care, with many poised to reintegrate into society. “They spoke of good food, new skills, and a fresh start,” noted an aid official.
The incident has sparked international calls for de-escalation and a return to dialogue. The death toll is expected to rise as recovery operations continue, casting a long shadow over what should have been a festive period.
