Swedish military authorities have confirmed the neutralization of a Russian-operated drone in close proximity to a French aircraft carrier, as concerns mount over Moscow’s alleged use of hybrid warfare tactics against European nations supporting Ukraine.
The incident occurred in the Ă–resund Strait, the waterway separating Denmark and Sweden. A Swedish naval vessel successfully jammed the unmanned aerial vehicle approximately eight miles from the French flagship, the Charles de Gaulle. While French officials have suggested such actions, if confirmed, would constitute a “ridiculous provocation,” the Kremlin has dismissed these remarks as absurd.
This event follows a pattern of increased aerial activity near NATO’s eastern frontiers. On the same day, Romanian air force jets were scrambled in response to a drone incursion during a Russian assault on Ukrainian territory. Multiple eastern alliance members have reported a surge in drone sightings in recent months, with several attributing the activity to Russia.
Separately, intelligence services in Denmark have issued a warning that a foreign state, likely Russia, may attempt to influence the upcoming general election through disinformation campaigns and cyber-attacks. Danish leadership has identified external interference as a significant national security threat.
In Hungary, domestic analysts note that the government is leveraging the Ukraine conflict in its political messaging ahead of April elections. State-funded advertisements, some reportedly generated using artificial intelligence, feature imagery of Ukrainian and European Union officials with captions criticizing financial support for Kyiv.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue on several fronts. The leaders of Ukraine and Slovakia have agreed to meet in person to resolve a dispute over a critical oil pipeline. Ukraine maintains the pipeline was damaged by Russian strikes, while Slovakia and Hungary assert it is operational. The disagreement has led Hungary to block a proposed EU financial aid package for Ukraine.
In a development related to nuclear safety, the International Atomic Energy Agency announced it has brokered another localized ceasefire between Ukrainian and Russian forces. This temporary truce, the fifth of its kind, will allow technicians to restore a backup power line to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
A tragic human cost of the conflict has also been highlighted. Officials from Ghana report that dozens of its citizens have been killed after being recruited to fight in Russia’s military. According to statements from Ghana’s foreign minister following a visit to Kyiv, hundreds of Ghanaians are believed to have been drawn into the conflict under false pretenses since 2022, resulting in numerous casualties. Ukrainian sources estimate over 1,700 individuals from various African nations are currently serving in Russian forces, a claim Russian authorities deny.
