Cambodia has issued a sharp condemnation of Thailand, alleging a significant military escalation even as diplomats from both nations were engaged in talks aimed at de-escalating border tensions. According to Cambodian authorities, Thai fighter jets conducted a bombing raid in a contested border region early Friday morning.
This incident marks a serious deterioration in relations, occurring on the third day of scheduled negotiations between the two countries. The renewed hostilities have reportedly resulted in dozens of casualties and the displacement of a large number of civilians in recent weeks, shattering a previously brokered, though fragile, ceasefire.
Cambodia’s defense ministry stated that the aerial attack involved multiple bombs dropped over a disputed village. In contrast, Thai media reports from Friday presented a counter-narrative, asserting that Cambodian forces had initiated heavy attacks overnight, damaging property in Thai border areas.
The longstanding and complex border dispute, which centers on historical temple sites and colonial-era demarcations, has seen repeated cycles of violence. Each government has consistently accused the other of instigating clashes and targeting civilian areas, while claiming its own actions are purely defensive.
