BANGLADESH MOURNS THE PASSING OF A POLITICAL PIONEER

by Emilie Lopes

Dhaka, Bangladesh – Khaleda Zia, a foundational and fiercely contested figure in the nation’s political history, has died at the age of 80. Her passing marks the end of an era defined by her decades-long power struggle with current political leadership.

Zia, who made history as the country’s first woman to hold the office of prime minister, rose to prominence following the assassination of her husband, former President Ziaur Rahman, a key military figure in Bangladesh’s democratic founding. She inherited his political movement, galvanizing support through her staunch opposition to military rule and first leading the government in the early 1990s.

Her political career, however, was characterized by intense rivalry. For over thirty years, the nation’s political landscape was dominated by the alternating tenures and bitter conflict between Zia and her principal opponent. After a return to power in 2001, her administration faced widespread allegations of graft. When her rival regained office several years later, Zia was convicted on corruption charges and sentenced to a decade in prison—a verdict her supporters decried as politically engineered.

For years, Zia remained confined, her health declining while her political party faced sustained pressure, with many senior members imprisoned or driven into exile. Her release came only after a significant political shift in 2024. Subsequent requests for her to seek medical treatment overseas were repeatedly denied until earlier this year.

Despite frail health, she had recently signaled her intention to participate in the upcoming national elections, the first since the change in government. Her condition worsened in late November, leading to her hospitalization.

In a statement, the acting head of government recognized Zia as an emblem of the nation’s democratic aspirations. Her son, having returned from nearly two decades abroad, is now positioned to lead their party into the forthcoming electoral contest.

Khaleda Zia is to be laid to rest in the capital, Dhaka, beside her late husband.
