BRITISH PARLIAMENTARIAN FACES INTERNATIONAL LEGAL REQUEST FROM BANGLADESH

by Emilie Lopes

A judicial body in Bangladesh has formally moved to seek an international alert for a sitting British Member of Parliament. The request to Interpol for a so-called “red notice” centers on allegations of corruption linked to a property transaction in Dhaka.

The case involves the allocation of a government-owned plot in the capital’s Gulshan area to a private firm. Bangladeshi authorities allege the MP improperly used familial connections to influence the deal. The parliamentarian, who represents a London constituency, has consistently denied all charges, labeling them as fabricated and politically driven.

Last year, a court in Dhaka delivered a verdict in absentia, finding the individual complicit and imposing a custodial sentence. Additional legal cases involving family members could result in a longer combined sentence. The MP has dismissed these rulings as fundamentally unjust.

Internationally, a red notice functions as a global police alert, not an arrest warrant. Compliance is voluntary for member countries. Legal experts note that the absence of an extradition agreement between the United Kingdom and Bangladesh presents a significant barrier to any potential transfer, making enforcement unlikely.

The MP stepped down from a ministerial role in the UK government last year, stating the ongoing legal matters were a distraction from official duties, while maintaining innocence.

The proceedings in Bangladesh have drawn criticism from a group of prominent British legal figures, including former senior government lawyers. They have raised serious concerns about the fairness of the trial process, citing allegations that the defendant was denied basic legal rights and that an appointed lawyer faced intimidation.

This legal action occurs amidst a broader political context in Bangladesh, where the current administration has prioritized investigating figures from the previous government. A central figure in that administration, a relative of the MP, remains outside the country and has not responded to requests to return.

The Interpol request is subject to review by the organization. While its practical effect may be limited due to the lack of an extradition framework, the issuance of such a notice carries considerable symbolic weight in international affairs.
