U.S. PERSONNEL KILLED IN AMBUSH IN CENTRAL SYRIA

A deadly assault in central Syria has resulted in the deaths of three American personnel and left several others wounded, according to U.S. defense officials. The incident, which occurred on Saturday near the historic town of Palmyra, is being attributed to militants linked to the Islamic State.

The attack targeted a U.S. military unit during what was described as a routine engagement operation. The casualties include two soldiers and one civilian contractor working as an interpreter. The assailant was reportedly killed by allied forces responding to the ambush.

In a statement, a Pentagon spokesperson confirmed the mission was part of ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the region. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of their families.

Local reports from Syria indicate that gunfire erupted at a security post, also wounding members of Syrian forces. The injured were evacuated by air to a coalition garrison near the borders with Iraq and Jordan.

While the Islamic State lost its territorial control in Syria years ago, remnants of the group remain active. Security analysts note that sleeper cells continue to pose a threat, carrying out sporadic attacks. International estimates suggest thousands of fighters are still dispersed across Syria and Iraq.

The United States maintains a military presence in eastern Syria as part of a multinational coalition focused on preventing a resurgence of extremist groups. This deployment has faced previous attacks, though Saturday’s ambush marks a significant escalation in violence.

The incident occurs amid a shifting political landscape in Syria, following changes in the country’s leadership over the past year. Recent months have seen a cautious warming of relations between Damascus and several Western nations, including the initiation of diplomatic contacts.
