French authorities have apprehended eleven individuals in connection with a violent incident last week that resulted in the death of a young man in Lyon. The case has drawn significant national attention amid a charged political climate.

The victim, a 23-year-old mathematics student, succumbed to a severe head injury after reportedly being thrown to the ground and assaulted by multiple individuals. The altercation occurred on the fringes of a university protest. According to a statement from local prosecutors, the investigation is focused on charges of intentional homicide and aggravated violence.

Among those detained is an aide to a member of parliament from the left-wing La France Insoumise (LFI) party. The parliamentarian confirmed the aide’s detention and stated the individual has been suspended from all official duties. The arrests include individuals suspected of direct involvement in the violence, as well as others accused of aiding them.

The incident has sparked heightened political tensions. The group with which the victim was associated, an anti-immigration collective, has alleged the attack was carried out by anti-fascist activists. A previously dissolved anti-fascist youth group has denied any involvement, labeling the events a tragedy.

In response to the killing, politicians observed a moment of silence at the National Assembly. The French President addressed the nation, calling for the perpetrators to be held accountable and urging public calm and restraint. “Hatred that kills has no place among us,” he stated.

In a related development, the national headquarters of the LFI party was evacuated due to a bomb threat. Police services responded to the scene, and no injuries were reported.

A march in memory of the deceased is planned for the coming weekend in Lyon as the judicial investigation continues.
