NETANYAHU TO HOLD TALKS WITH TRUMP AMID RISING TENSIONS AND STALLED PEACE PLAN

by Emilie Lopes

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida on Monday. This high-stakes summit comes at a critical juncture, with international concerns mounting over potential new Israeli military actions in the region and a fragile peace process for Gaza at a standstill.

The discussions at the Mar-a-Lago resort are expected to focus heavily on the stalled implementation of a U.S.-backed ceasefire plan for Gaza. While an initial phase of the agreement has been largely completed, the subsequent steps—which include establishing an interim Palestinian governing authority and deploying an international stabilization force—have made little progress. Analysts point to a growing impasse, with one side failing to commit to disarmament and consolidating its control in populated areas, and the other showing reluctance to withdraw from occupied territory or facilitate humanitarian access.

Beyond Gaza, the agenda is likely to address escalating regional threats. Israeli officials have expressed alarm over the military capabilities of Hezbollah in Lebanon and Iran’s ballistic missile program. There are fears that Israel may be preparing offensives that could shatter existing ceasefires, potentially destabilizing the wider Middle East. The Israeli leader is anticipated to seek U.S. support, including assurances on maintaining Israel’s qualitative military edge, especially following controversial U.S. comments regarding advanced arms sales to other regional states.

The timing of the meeting is viewed as politically significant for Netanyahu, who faces a national election within the year. Maintaining a strong public alliance with the U.S. administration is seen as crucial for his domestic standing. Consequently, observers expect the talks to be conducted without public discord, despite reported frustrations within the U.S. administration over what some see as Israeli actions that undermine the peace process.

The outcome of this meeting is being closely watched, as it could determine whether the fragile calm in Gaza collapses and if the region is steered toward further confrontation or renewed diplomatic effort.
