The 2026 Academy Awards ceremony delivered a series of landmark victories, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s ambitious feature “One Battle After Another” emerging as the evening’s biggest winner. The film secured six Oscars, including the coveted Best Picture prize.

In his acceptance speech, Anderson dedicated the film to younger generations, expressing a hope for a renewed sense of principle in society. The win marked the acclaimed director’s first Oscar after several previous nominations throughout his career.

The night also saw significant milestones for performers. Michael B. Jordan earned his first Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the gothic epic “Sinners.” In his remarks, he paid tribute to the legacy of Black artists who paved the way. Meanwhile, Jessie Buckley made history by becoming the first Irish actress to win Best Actress for her performance in “Hamnet.”

The supporting actor categories celebrated both new and veteran talent. Sean Penn won for his work in “One Battle After Another,” while Amy Madigan set a record for the longest gap between nominations before her supporting actress win for the horror film “Weapons.”

Other notable wins included the family drama “Sentimental Value,” which brought Norway its first Oscar for International Feature Film. The directors used their platform to deliver a message of social responsibility. The documentary award went to “Mr Nobody Against Putin,” a film chronicling resistance within modern Russia.

The ceremony was not without its lighter moments and pointed commentary. Host Conan O’Brien opened the show with a comedic montage and delivered a monologue that touched on the current cultural landscape. The broadcast also included poignant tributes to several film industry figures who passed away in the last year.

Films leaving without awards included several highly nominated contenders, underscoring the competitive nature of this year’s race. The event ultimately served as a major victory for its primary studio, marking a significant return to the Best Picture winner’s circle.

The 2026 Oscars will be remembered as a night where cinematic ambition was rewarded, historic barriers were broken, and the industry reflected on its role in a complex world.
