SERIE A’S THRILLING RACE: INTER’S ROLLERCOASTER RIDE TO THE SUMMIT

by Patrick Pouyanné

The Serie A title race is being defined by volatility, not consistency. This weekend, Inter Milan climbed to the league’s summit, a position that underscores a season of dramatic highs and lows. Under Cristian Chivu, the Nerazzurri have adopted a win-or-bust mentality, having not recorded a single draw this campaign. Their latest victory, a hard-fought 2-1 result against Genoa, propelled them to the top, fueled by goals from Yann Bisseck and Lautaro Martínez.

Chivu has dismissed early-season skepticism about his team’s prospects, pointing to their current standing as validation. While Inter have suffered defeats, including recent setbacks in European competition, their domestic form has been built on securing maximum points. This approach marks a clear shift; in a league where every win is crucial, cautious football is being overshadowed by a more daring, emotionally charged pursuit of success.

The contrast with their city rivals is stark. AC Milan, despite remaining unbeaten for a long stretch, continue to stumble against lesser opposition. A draw with Sassuolo—their fifth of the season—highlighted a recurring issue. While they have shown strength in marquee matches, their inability to routinely dispatch teams from the lower half of the table is costing them dearly in the standings.

Elsewhere, Napoli’s challenges under Antonio Conte appear to be mounting. A narrow loss to Udinese exposed a fatigued squad, a consequence of a rigid selection policy that seems ill-suited to the demands of multiple competitions. The strain of a packed fixture list is taking a visible toll.

At the very bottom, Fiorentina’s crisis deepened to historic proportions. A last-gasp defeat to Hellas Verona left them rooted to the foot of the table without a win all season, a situation from which no team has ever recovered. The club’s desperate measures, including an enforced training retreat, have so far yielded no improvement, casting a long shadow over their top-flight future.

The narrative of this Serie A season is one of extremes. Inter’s path to the top has been anything but smooth, but their capacity to secure victories, however turbulent, is proving decisive. As the campaign progresses, this willingness to embrace the rollercoaster may well separate the contenders from the rest.
